About:
Jazz Affair has now been around for ten years, making their way as one of the rare Canadian a cappella groups working in jazz. This sextet combines six unique voices that unite into a dynamic and colourful whole: Luce Bélanger (soprano) Marie-Pier Deschênes (mezzo-soprano), Camille Legault Coulombe (alto), Jean-François Aubin (tenor), Louis Laprise (baryton) and Christian B. Poulin (bass). Their repertoire is composed of jazz standards and original arrangements of famous songs, to which they add a jazz flavour. From the very start, they drew attention by the quality of their arrangements and their interpretations. Their work has been recognized at the Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival in New York, where they walked away with two prizes in 2012. Since then, the band has made many appearances at large-scale shows and festivals in Canada (a tour in British Columbia in 2018, a tour in the Maritime in 2019 and a tour in Alberta 2020). Jazz Affair has two albums in its discography: Wishes (2019) and Jam (2017). In 2020, the sextet is nominated at three distinct awards; the Prix Opus (Québec) in the “Jazz concert of the year” category, at the JUNO awards (Canada) for the “Vocal Jazz Album of the Year” and at the Independant Music Awards in the “Jazz album with vocals” category. At the same award, Jazz Affair won the Vox Pop prize for their song “Jour heureux”.

La voix, ça vous dit, évidemment. A cappella, ça vous dit toujours? Genre The Manhattan Transfer, sans le caractère ou côté singe savant de cirque? Si c’est le cas, si tout cela vous dit comme dans Dizzy, alors Jazz Affair vous donnera son comptant de contentement.
Au ras des pâquerettes, cela donne ceci: l’« Affaire jazz » est un groupe fondé à Québec et rassemblant six chanteurs. Leurs noms? Luce Bélanger, Marie-Pier Deschênes, Camille Legault-Coulombe, Jean-François Aubin, Louis Laprise et Christian B. Poulin. Il n’y a pas d’instruments. Enfin, c’est pas tout à fait ça.
En fait d’instruments, chacun d’entre eux les imite à la manière d’un Bobby McFerrin. Ils ne font pas les bâillements de crocodile chers, par exemple, aux trombones ou les longues plaintes prisées des saxophonistes et autres cuivres. Par contre, ils font la contrebasse et les percussions. Ils font la rythmique sans le piano. Et ils font cela comme des cadors ou, comme disent les locaux, comme des champions.
Autrement dit, quand l’un et l’autre chantent les paroles, les autres les ponctuent à coups de points, de virgules, mais aussi du trop négligé point-virgule. Quoi d’autre? Intitulée Wishes sur l’étiquette Jazz Affair, tout simplement, cette aventure musicale est placée sous le patronage de la baronne Pannonica de Koenigswarter. Bon.
D’origine britannique, la baronne fut la protectrice des musiciens de jazz en général et de Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk et Bud Powell en particulier. Aussi fantasque que généreuse, elle fut le sujet de nombreuses compositions. Cela explique ceci: le programme fixé par les membres de Jazz Affair tourne autour de Nica, ainsi que l’appelaient les musiciens dans les années 1950 et jusqu’à sa mort en 1988.

L’album que nous proposent ces six artisans de la voix malaxée sous toutes les formes possibles et imaginables est une sympathique traduction musicale du charme.
