Review:
Originally from Calgary, Canada, and currently studying for a master’s degree in jazz performance at McGill University in Montreal, vocalist, composer, arranger and bandleader Caity Gyorgy has been called one of ‘Eight Canadian women in jazz you need to know’ by Toronto’s JAZZ.FM91 radio station. Released on the Brooklyn-based La Reserve label, this five-track EP of self-penned songs provides a perfect showcase for Gyorgy’s multifarious talents, not least some impressive scatting on the effervescent, up-tempo ‘Secret Safe’, the assured arrangements for her tentet, the surprising harmonic twists and turns and memorable melodies of ‘There By The Door’ and ‘12th Avenue’, plus a wry, sardonic sense of humour as witnessed in the tableaux of infidelities depicted in the filmic ‘Why’d You Gotta’, which also features some fine soloing by clarinettist Virginia MacDonald and bari sax player Kyle Tarder-Stoll, and the similarly mocking ‘The B’, scored for voice, piano and an especially perky triangle.
