Just in time for Nils Landgren’s 60th birthday, the most elaborate project of his remarkable career was released. Featuring music from musicals like “West Side Story” and a lineup that includes his outstanding All-Star Band, over 18 members of the Bochumer Symphoniker, and singer Janis Siegel from the legendary “The Manhattan Transfer,” Landgren, along with conductor and arranger Vince Mendoza, pays tribute to the jazz enthusiast and great composer of the 20th century, Leonard Bernstein.

Swedish trombone player Nils Landgren turns 60 on February 15, 2016, and he marks this special year with a tribute album to the music of Leonard Bernstein. Landgren has brought together a formidable band to do justice to the music of Bernstein, a composer, he says, whose “music is unique, the way he writes is distinctive, emotional and always so human”.
Landgren calls on the 18-member jazz Bochum Symphony Orchestra, multi-Grammy winning arranger Vince Mendoza and Janis Siegel, from the The Manhattan Transfer, a singer who captures the New York spirit of Bernstein’s music. The 12 pieces include tunes from On the Town, Wonderful Town and West Side Story. The song Marie allows Landgren to show off his trombone prowess, while Cool features the cool Jan Lundgren on piano. And what energetic bass Dieter Ilg provides throughout. An enjoyable album.
