Review:

Trombone marvel Ryan Keberle led a range of projects in 2024, including the Catharsis quartet with Camila Meza (Music Is Connection) and the classically themed trio Reverso (Shooting Star–Étoile Filante). Bright Moments (Posi-Tone) finds him with an octet, presenting original music of uncommon melodic richness, beautifully arranged. Patrick Cornelius, chiefly an altoist, is exceptional on bass clarinet and alto flute on “All Ears,” and soprano sax on the gorgeous ballad “Sisters of Mine.” Michael Dease, fellow ace trombonist, takes up his other horn, the bari sax, beefing up the reeds and soloing with characteristic badness. “Make America Again,” which stands out for the title alone, is hymn-like in a way that suggests Abdullah Ibrahim.
